In this original and poetic work, Lara Rae tells the raw and heartfelt story of her half century long (and counting) gender odyssey. Turning the autobiographical solo show upside down, Dragonfly presents two actors illuminating the inner life of one trans woman from her Scottish childhood in the 1960s to the present day. Resisting binaries at every turn, this one-of-a-kind play reveals the contradictions and multitudes within us all that must be confronted in the pursuit of authenticity and freedom.
Intimately staged among the stacks at Granville Island’s beloved bookstore and literary studio Upstart & Crow, this production follows the characters as they crack open their old journals and wade into the murky past trying to figure out which moments to include in the story of a life. From childhood longings to adolescent rebellions, from the crowds and parties of the stand-up comedy scene to the most private domestic moments, Dragonfly lets us into one woman’s world and traces the joy, desire, pain, and wonder of becoming yourself at any cost.

Featuring an all-trans cast, this West Coast premiere is a startling work of theatrical poetry by one of the country’s leading storytellers.
