July 22, 2025 was proclaimed Chris Morrissey Day to honour the work of a remarkable woman. This year on July 15, the City Council took some time to recognize the day and again read the proclamation of her accomplishments.
Chris was an Order of Canada recipient for her work changing our immigration laws to allow same-sex partners of 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians to establish residency. She cofounded two immigration support organizations, Lesbian and Gay Immigration Taskforce (LEGIT) in 1991 and Rainbow Refugee in 2000, to bring queer folks to Canada who were facing oppression and violence in other countries. Plus, Chris was active on four city advisory committees for: Older Persons and Elders; Women; 2SLGBTQ+; and Disabilities.
And of course she was our beloved founder of QUIRK-E in 2006. Chris passed away April 14, 2025.
Vancouver City Councillors took turns reading the 14 ‘Whereas’ statements on the Proclamation. Also present were members of city advisory committees, Rainbow Refugee, and QUIRK-E.
