Connecting Across Generations

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2026, in an expansive room at Creekside Community Centre overlooking the shimmering waters of False Creek, over 30 queer folks ranging from ages 22 to 87 shared stories, experiences and queries at Intergenerational Chats 2.

How do we find pride and self-confidence? How do we create events that welcome and attract all generations? How do we draw upon elders’ lived experiences of winning human rights to address the attacks on trans, indigenous and queer rights today? These were a few of the concerns shared through heart to heart dialogue sparked by stories and poems offered by Blair Brienza, Pat Hogan, Gayle Roberts, Tayf Almoghazy, Cyndia Cole, Garth McIver, Val Innes, Mela Brown, Don Orr Martin and Adriaan De Vries.

Kudos to QUIRK-E and to the 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusion Team of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation for responding to the call to mount another intergenerational dialogue. Many voices are now calling for a repeat opportunity early in 2027. They say they were moved, energized and encouraged by the warmth, safety and open- hearted connections they created.

Pat Hogan read the poem Child’s Play describing Gayle Roberts’ beginning awareness of herself as trans in the 1940s
