I watched this film about two weeks ago and intended to write a review while it was still fresh in my psyche. Even though I was busy, I kept thinking about the film because of the anti-trans garbage on TV news about politicians passing horrible legislation and social media posts by people proclaiming, “there are two genders…PERIOD” and that children have to be saved from the “WOKE” menaces cutting off their genitals. Yikes it is sick out there and I’m cis, revolted and worried. I am sorry for the the trans folks scapegoated and for the kids, parents, teachers and healthcare professionals now threatened even with prison for providing kids help.
So, because of this climate I was especially curious what someone like Will Ferrell would say or do on the subject of trans people. The release date was in September 2024 but I had read no reviews when I pushed play on the TV remote. What I experienced was a sympathetic and ultimately positive transverse of middle “Merica’s” citizens’ reaction to Harper who was new in her transition. I expected Will to hog too much limelight but I think his contribution was genuine, supportive and injected just enough clown to lighten the mood. Harper Steele impressed me with her courage of course and the authenticity of her being who she is. Harper’s kids and colleagues also showed grace and love. It was the bikers and other demographics they purposely sought out who reacted in ignorance or curiosity but then allowed themselves to open up that really brought a tear to my eye. You see, I really do want to believe in the best of humanity.
Anyway I am glad this documentary was made and I hope if you watch it you like it.Then maybe suggest it to others because understanding and support for the transgender, nonbinary and queers in general is very important in a climate of demonizing and punishing.
